What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling uses fine, sterile needles within a musculoskeletal treatment framework. At MT Recovery & Wellness, Tom uses dry needling where it is appropriate for muscular pain, sensitivity, tightness or movement-related symptoms. It is used as an adjunct to treatment rather than a stand-alone cure.

Tom offers dry needling, not acupuncture. If you want a clear comparison, read our Dry Needling vs Acupuncture guide.

How Dry Needling Differs from Acupuncture

Dry needling and acupuncture both use fine needles, but they are not simply two names for the same treatment. Dry needling is commonly used in sports and musculoskeletal practice and is selected according to the person’s symptoms, assessment and treatment goals. Acupuncture uses different training frameworks and may follow traditional or Western medical approaches.

When Dry Needling May Be Useful

  • Muscular pain or sensitivity: it may help reduce symptoms in selected areas.
  • Persistent muscular tightness: it can be used alongside hands-on treatment and movement work.
  • Movement-related discomfort: short-term symptom relief may make movement feel easier.
  • Sports and training-related symptoms: it may be included as one part of a wider recovery or rehabilitation plan.

Dry needling cannot guarantee pain relief, repair injured tissue directly or replace appropriate rehabilitation or medical care.

Before Your Dry Needling Session

  • Share relevant medical information: including medication, pregnancy, bleeding disorders, recent surgery or other health concerns.
  • Mention needle anxiety: treatment can be adapted or another approach can be used.
  • Wear practical clothing: the treatment area needs to be accessible while maintaining your comfort and privacy.
  • Speak up during treatment: tell Tom immediately if a sensation feels sharp, unusual or concerning.

Dry Needling as Part of a Wider Treatment Plan

Dry needling is not used automatically in every session. Depending on your symptoms and goals, treatment may also involve Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, movement work, assisted stretching or rehabilitation advice. The aim is to choose techniques that fit your presentation rather than relying on needles alone.
